Mr. Jurrius has spent over 35-years developing projects and providing financial solutions exclusively in partnership with Tribal Nations in the United States and First Nations, Inuit, and Métis in Canada (“Nations”). His vision and determination to assist Indigenous Nations in empowering their rights and resources to create economies capable of sustaining their socio-economic needs through the deployment of capital and business expertise has led to the creation of hundreds of millions of dollars of new long-term commercial revenue and billions in assets for these Nations. These investments have provided sector or above returns for investors, while at the same time creating needed commercial revenues and economies for Nations.
While serving internally to Indigenous communities in the first 20 years of his career as a business advisor and investment banker, Mr. Jurrius recognized that accessing equity capital is the number one barrier facing Nations as they strive to produce economic independence and financial sovereignty. With this realization, Mr. Jurrius set out to create an exclusive platform that would bridge private investment with Indigenous Communities. In 2008, Mr. Jurrius launched Native American Resource Partners (“NARP”), the first investment firm dedicated to serving the Indigenous space. As a portfolio company of Houston-based Quantum Energy Partners LLC, NARP’s investments, were strictly limited by its sources of capital to non-renewable energy projects. In 2016, with the recognition that Indigenous Nations needed a dedicated capital source that could partner to deploy across all commercial sectors, Mr. Jurrius founded Indigena Capital as the first sector agnostic capital provider in the Indigenous space.
Mr. Jurrius has been the architect in providing and sourcing more than $2.5 billion of capital to Indigenous projects that have spanned the infrastructure, energy, renewable energy, agriculture, and real estate sectors. These activities led to the creation of two, billion-dollar Nation led commercial platforms, and included a U.S. Tribal Nation achieving a AAA credit rating as a Nation in 2001 from Moody’s and Fitch, one of only thirteen Nations in the world to receive such a rating at the time; the Nation continues to carry that rating today.
As a champion for Indigenous investment, Mr. Jurrius continuously brings attention to the fact that the Indigenous space has latent opportunity and a multitude of advantages providing a preferred haven for investing. He takes great pride in the fact that while some see these investments as nothing more than financial returns, the impacts of these investments have provided not only new economies for Nation partners but have socio-economic impacts well beyond returns with direct correlation to housing, healthcare, education, and overall community wellbeing and growth.
As Mr. Jurrius and his LPs champion building out the Indigena Platform for the purpose of providing equity capital to Indigenous Communities worldwide, it is concerning that after over 35-years of proving the financial model, along with the one-to-one direct impact, that to this day, less than one basis point of private equity or venture capital AUM between the U.S. and Canada would be dedicated to or specializes in the space. Mr. Jurrius and Indigena will continue to work to change this and build a permanent bridge of capital providers serving this space.
In recognition of Mr. Jurrius’ work, Mr. Jurrius was conferred the honour of being inducted into the Kainai Chieftancy in 2012. This honour is given by the Kainai / Blood Tribe of Alberta and is seen as an official bridge between cultures.
Prior to his work with Nations, Mr. Jurrius attended Angelo State University after serving in the U.S. Military as a military intelligence analyst.
